Hipatia Lopez Delivers ‘Empanada Fork’ to the World’s Kitchen

HSN and Dreamers Venture have partnered to create Project American Dreams– a business competition to discover, mentor and fast-track the launch of product innovations created by Latino entrepreneurs on HSN. The winners will take their inventions from start-up to stardom; something greatly needed in our community. In the semi-finalists phase, sixteen hopefuls are now pitching their innovations to an expert panel of judges, at HSN studios. One of those hopefuls is the creator of Empanada Fork.

Hipatia López always knew she wanted to be her own boss. At 13, she knew she wanted to be an innovator and applied her hard work to earning a full scholarship to William Patterson University where she graduated with an Accounting degree.

Born and raised in NJ, of Ecuadorian heritage, Hipatia, who usually hosts her family during the holidays, was feeling frustrated as she made her usual 100s of empanadas for friends and family.  That’s how she invented the Empanada Fork.

With her kids as her inspiration and her mom as her strongest supporter, Hipatia started her entrepreneurship journey with this same hard-working ethic but going from idea to prototype wasn’t easy. Cold-calling everyone, Hipatia would hear responses like, “HONEY, are you even a company?” But her persistence paid off, in spite of having to learn to work with patent lawyers, revamp a failed prototype and take out a home equity line of credit. Now, Hipatia thinks, “Why shouldn’t being an inventor be an option in life?”

Hipatia dreams of seeing her product on supermarket shelves right next to the frozen dough discs in a big box store or distributor in each state but as a small business she has to be really picky about where her money goes so this means all her PR is done through social media. Winning Project American Dreams and having the opportunity to present in 94 million homes on HSN would be a dream come true for an entrepreneur who didn’t even have money for an infomercial.

Project American Dreams platform inspires me to keep pushing forward to achieve success. I hope to learn more about banking options and how to grow my business by getting professional help and mentoring.

In speaking with Enclave, Ms. López has great advise for entrepreneurs:

I would tell inventors and entrepreneurs to become involved in networking to meet others like themselves. I personally – love to learn from others who have been in business for years. Their advice is priceless!

As a committed Latina she is all about community equity building “I treasure the support we give each other in business. We cheer each other on and want one another to succeed in their business. La latinidad is fueled with passion and purpose!,” says Hipatia López.
