Conservatives adorn themselves head-to-toe in Trumpian regalia and plaster their property with jarring right-wing imagery, and their intensity, their bellowing, their outright fanaticism—all of it binds conservatives to the Republican Party.
There is just something about an overly aggressive, hostile, boastful jerk masquerading as a tough guy that makes huge swaths of any given population say, “Sure, go ahead and arrest my neighbors, control the media, and kill foreigners, because you’re the boss.”
With politics becoming as rigidly a part of one’s identity as race or generation group, asking a conservative to vote Democrat is like asking them to drink kale smoothies while listening to NPR in their Prius.
